Los Angeles Senior High School is located in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood within Los Angeles, California. According to the most recent available data, enrollment remained around 2,210 students.
LA High School has a primarily Hispanic population which makes up 77.5% of the student body. There are approximately 163 teachers which provide a student-teacher ratio of 14:1. Teachers on campus have an average of 11 years experience.
Located within the main campus is a math and science magnet school which offers AP courses for qualifying students. The magnet school offers 10 different courses students can take for college credit while still in high school. Typically, 85% of seniors graduating from the magnet program will attend a four-year college or university.
The main high school offers a variety of student clubs and extracurricular activities. There are several clubs based on varying interests that students have the opportunity to join.
Another positive feature Los Angeles High School offers is the advantage of online homework assignments. Students can enter the school’s main website, choose their class and see what homework assignments they will have for the night and subsequent assignments as well. This technology can not only easily allow students to keep up with their work but also keep parents involved with their child’s education.
Conversely, the dropout rates for Los Angeles High are among the highest in the state. The dropout rate was 8.2%, which ranked the school at 18 on a list of 100 schools with the highest dropout rates in the state of California.
Poor performance on the state exit exams and standardized tests have also been reported. Students who opted to take the SAT also performed poorly overall with a comprehensive score of 1297. This score places students within the low 26-27th percentile overall. Compared to California averages of SAT Math, Reading, and Writing scores, the scores were also below average. On average,only 35% of graduating seniors continue on to a four-year college or university.
Los Angeles High School needs improvement in areas of academics but provides students with the opportunity to excel through its magnet program. Unfortunately, surrounding gang activity has tarnished the school’s reputation. Future students have the opportunity to redirect the reputation of this school if they take advantage of the resources in front of them.
